'the awareness that unfolds when we pay attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally'
Mindfulness is a way of relating to yourself and the world around you, bringing awareness to whatever is happening. It is a natural state of mind, focused and clear. It’s not something you have to acquire, but rather a deep internal resource already available, waiting to be accessed - and the results can be life-changing.
Mindfulness training offers life-enhancing benefits for everyone, whether you are dealing with stress, illness or simply wishing to gain more balance, peace and connectedness in your life and relationships.
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) has become the gold standard in mindfulness training worldwide. It was developed by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, USA and brings together research in neuroscience, psychology and current understandings of human functioning. It is a secular program, using meditation, gentle movement and a range of techniques enabling you to work with your own life challenges consciously and effectively.
Over the past thirty years MBSR has been offered in hundreds of organisations, medical centres and hospitals around the world. Results of extensive clinical studies and research on MBSR support that participants have experienced:
a 70% reduction in anxiety
a reduction in debilitating stress and associated hormones such as cortisol
an increase in disease-fighting antibodies suggesting improvement in the immune system
reduced negative feelings such as anger, tension and depression
improved concentration, memory and decision making
improvements in physical conditions as varied as psoriasis, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue
less invasive ways to work with chronic pain-related illness
longer and better quality sleep
fewer visits to the GP
